About Jay Underwood
Jay Underwood, born and raised in Northern Queensland, moved to Brisbane at the age of 17 to follow his academic pursuits. After completing his secondary education at Holy Spirit College, Jay enrolled at the University of Queensland where he is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Journalism and Communication majoring in Public Relations.
At high school, Jay was not only sporting house captain but he was also an integral part of the school swimming team which awarded him the opportunity to travel throughout Australia. Jay’s swimming prowess enabled him to strengthen his organisational and communication skills. Exposure to such mature environments at an early age helped shape Jay’s outgoing personality and held him in good stead for his professional career. Jay is organised, time-efficient, personable and has a positive outlook; traits which have assisted him throughout his degree and intern career.
Over the course of his degree Jay has interned as a newspaper journalist for The Daily Mercury, as a content creator and reporter for the UQ BEL faculty’s online magazine, and as a public relations professional for Sharp PR. He has also worked part-time as the sole publicist for HOTTIE Australia. During these internships and work experiences, Jay completed numerous professional writing tasks including news and feature articles, press releases, social media posts, newsletter blurbs, blog posts and information sheets. He also carried out tasks such as conducting interviews, sourcing correct background information, and displayed efficient time management skills.
In the future Jay hopes to work with organisations that help the LGBT community. He believes the work would be challenging but ultimately rewarding.
