As women get older, our bodies go through many changes. Once we hit our 50s, things begin to shift and sag to the point where our old clothes just don’t fit the same anymore. To combat this we opt for baggier clothing to hide the new bumps and bulges. But this can actually do more harm than good and age us drastically.
Trends come and go, but mastering how to dress in your 50s and beyond lies within knowing how to dress for your age. Simple pieces like a crisp white shirt, a trench coat, a comfortable polo neck sweater or an elegant wrap dress are always flattering.
This doesn’t mean women over 50 can’t have fun with their wardrobe. 50s should not mean frumpy; it’s about elegance, comfort and effortless style. With over 30 years’ experience as a fashion designer, I know how to make women feel feminine, confident and authentic.\
As a mature professional women, ditch the boxy blazers with shoulder pads and experiment with separates. Long gone are the days where trousers were forbidden and pantyhose were a must; nowadays the office has become more casual and colorful.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match by layering your wardrobe essentials and accessories; you’ll not only look chic, you’ll also expand your wardrobe whilst saving money. Also, invest in a few tailored pieces that flatter your figure and are made of quality fabrics like cashmere, wool and cotton.
When it comes to looking older, one of the biggest giveaways is casual dress. Until recently many of us were restricted to elastics waist pants or ‘mum jeans’. Now manufacturers are designing jeans for every body type and are making it easier for mature women to find a more flattering fit. A pair of well-fitting jeans is well worth the investment, so take the time to try on numerous sizes and styles to find the most flattering and age-appropriate fit.
Once you have the perfect pair of jeans, have some fun with a classic top, a bright accessory and a simple shoe. If your arms are you biggest insecurity, go for ¾ length shirts, dresses and cover-ups. This is a much more flattering length than a full long sleeve.
For evening events, long is no longer the rule. A simple black dress is always perfect for an evening out and can be extremely versatile depending on the event. Dress it up with jewelry, shoes, an elegant evening bag and a wrap, but be careful not to over-accessorize.
The key to looking classy and elegant is showing a little skin and highlighting your best assets. If you’re confident and comfortable with showing some body, whether it be your arms, cleavage, legs or back, then don’t be afraid to show them.
You can easily look fabulous in your 50s. It’s all about confidence and getting to know your body. There’s nothing a good haircut and a great outfit can’t do to make you look and feel fantastic.
