FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For those of you who remember legionnaire hats from your school days, the hats have been declared as one of this summer’s must-haves; a move applauded by sun safety experts.
Legionnaires were recently dubbed as one of this summer’s must-have accessories by dance music blog Stoney Roads, and as “something that needs to be brought back” by Triple J’s Matt and Alex.
Often seen at school playgrounds and music festivals, legionnaire hats meet the Cancer Council’s standards of a sun-safe hat as the back and slide flaps cover the neck and the sides of the face better than regular baseballs caps and visors.
Brisbane-based plastic surgeon, Dr David Sharp, is glad that the younger generation is taking into consideration sun safety when it comes to their fashion choices.
“Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world and it’s about time that people are really taking every precaution necessary for avoiding skin cancers like melanomas and basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma,” Dr Sharp said.
The practicality of the flaps attached to the back of legionnaires has been widely praised due to the protection it provides for the back of one’s neck and scalp.
A 2008 study conducted in the United States found that people with scalp or neck melanomas died at nearly twice the rate of those with melanoma elsewhere on the body.
According to Dr Sharp, the deadliness of scalp and neck melanomas can be attributed to the delayed diagnosis due to hair and vision obscurity.
“We are told constantly to regularly check for moles and lumps on our bodies. But the back of one’s neck and scalp isn’t easily visible and it becomes difficult to notice any irregularities.”
“If you’re experiencing difficulty when looking for moles or other skin irregularities on your scalp or neck, then ask of friend to help you out – it may not be the easiest task but it could save your life.”
